Vermut hour: Barcelona's slowest tradition

Somewhere between lunch and the rest of the day, Barcelona stops. Not for a coffee — for a vermut. A small glass of the city's sweet, herbal, faintly bitter house drink, poured over ice with a twist of orange and, if the bar is any good, an olive on a stick.

The ritual is the point. Vermut is not something you drink quickly on the way to something else. You sit. You talk. You order a second small plate you didn't strictly need. An hour disappears and nobody minds.

Tourists walk past it because it doesn't look like an activity. That's exactly why it's worth doing: it's the one part of the day the city keeps for itself, and the fastest way to stop feeling like a visitor is to sit down and keep the hour with them.
